Gone are the days when the word ‘Law Professional’ brought an image of a person wearing a black and white robe and going to the courtroom. Nowadays, a degree in law can lead to exciting career options in future. Law degree holders can explore career opportunities in multiple sectors. With the change in career trends, there is a shift from the traditional roles to non-traditional ones. Law graduates are employed in executive, judiciary and legislature department of the Government- an exception which no other graduate can boast of. Apart from that, they work in corporate houses, law firms, law agencies, administrative services, media houses etc.

Civil and criminal were two of the most popular specializations in law previously. But now there are many newer specializations like corporate law, constitutional law, media and entertainment law, taxation law, cyber law etc that are huge hits for the law aspirants. Students from different backgrounds such as Science, Commerce, Humanities can opt for law courses.

Some courses in law are discussed below:

Undergraduate courses (UG)

LLB- Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) is the most popular course in the field of law. After completing 12 th standard in any discipline,candidates can pursue LLB. Duration of this course is 3 years.

Integrated courses- A candidate who has finished his 12 th standard can also opt for the various integrated law courses like BA LLB, BCom LLB, BSc LLB, BBA LLB. These programmes consist of 5 years.

Postgraduate courses (PG)

LLM- Master of Law (LLM) is the master degree course in legal education. It is 2 years in duration.

Candidates aspiring to pursue a degree in law must appear in entrance examinations. Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) etc are a few popular entrance examinations.

Job Profiles for Law degree holders:

Lawyer– A lawyer or an advocate gives advice in legal matters or represents someone in court of law.As a part of their job profile, they have to counsel clients , prepare legal documents, perform legal research and represent their clients in criminal and civil court proceedings.

Judge– A judge holds the most esteemed position in court of law. He has to ensure law is followed and carried out in each case by looking at all the evidence and listening to the witnesses. He has to read through court documents and research legal issues.

Legal advisors– Professionals in this field creates legal documents, gives legal assistance, to clients and organizations, organizes and completes legal activities. They provide legal advice in cases of dispute, prevent litigation and contractual and litigatory issues to individuals and organisations.

Legal Executives– When discussing legal issues with other firms, these executives represent their business houses. As a part of their profile, they need to perform many administrative functions like checking deeds, collecting information for affidavit,, draft legal documents etc.
